We hear various bits of information about how art and life may or may not imitate each other. As Oscar Wilde has said, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” Wherever you lean on this consideration, the truth is that art is an integral part of all of our lives.

This can be revealed in the artistry of a pose along with the music we play in and out of class, how we adorn ourselves and how we use imagery like mandalas, yantras, and chakras to deepen our practice.

Teachers, sages, and guides frequently incorporate creativity to help us move forward on our path.

This Sunday, Mari Mendoza will be uniting sound, imagery, and more creative arts to facilitate this journey through all of the senses.

Next week, Ethos Art Gallery welcomes Yuan Miao–singer, spiritual teacher, and artist–for a gallery opening and a series of workshops. Yuan Miao demonstrates her alchemy and artistry with these uniquely empowered paintings. The show opens on August 22 and runs in the gallery through September 12 with a number of different events and workshops being offered in the space. Ethos Gallery’s Lisa Falcone interviewed Yuan Miao to learn more of the story behind the paintings.

Our everyday life can be art–if we take the time to create sacred space. Think about meditating–even for a moment, or a few moments–before embarking on something that allows you to enter the realm of the artistic. Try a few breaths of your favorite pranayama practice to allow your mind to enter a powerful zone of expansion, possibility, and creativity. Hang your favorite yantra on the wall (or order one of Arlene Johnson’s chakra series prints from her website) and gaze upon it in daydreaming moments.

We are all artists, in every breath. I’d love to hear you share your favorite techniques for incorporating artistry in your life. Like us on Facebook and share your thoughts with us here. Or…email me here.

In the Creative Spirit,

Endure Discomfort To Do What’s Right

LA YOGA Astrology
Our discipline may fly out the window when Mars enters Cancer this coming Sunday. “Mars is the primary planet of discipline, giving us the strength to sacrifice our comfort in the moment for our principles,” shares Sam Geppi in LA YOGA’s July/August astrology. “Activities like yoga require us to endure some discomfort in order to do what is right. Cancer is the sign in which Mars is debilitated, as Cancer is a sign of emotion and comfort.” Be careful of your choices around this period. For a more in-depth breakdown of the summer months astrology, visit LA YOGA: Astrology.

Passport to Prana: Hot 8 Yoga Santa Monica

Passport to Prana
LA YOGA is grateful to team up with Passport to Prana, the original multi-studio yoga pass that entitles you to one class at each of participating yoga studio throughout Los Angeles for just $30.

“Wednesdays at Hot 8 Yoga Santa Monica are heart openers. In Bianca’s Yin yoga class, she turns all the lights out, and encourages the class to direct their attention inward, and allow the warmth of the room to move deep into the body, and move any stuck energy. The room was dark, solely illuminated by amber rope lighting,” share LA YOGA writer Kaitlin Huwe when reflecting on her experience when using her Passport to Prana pass. “The space was glowing, and I was surrounded by a bunch of strong and dedicated yogis. What I love about Bianca’s class is that she goes into depth, and explains the benefits of each pose. While she offers options to go deeper, she emphasized the importance of non-doing in the Yin practice. Hot 8 Yoga in Santa Monica is such a pretty, clean, and sleek studio that it feels almost like a spa. When I walked in the door, I knew I was getting a treat.”
