From the Editor

We spend time gearing up for any special event, planning, preparing, shopping, inviting, and as is the case for Thanksgiving, sharing gratitude. But just because we are a week past the holiday of toasts and tradition, feasts and fetes, doesn’t mean that our engaged practice of sharing our thanks should come to a close.

This week, the largest issue yet of LA YOGA is being delivered (you may have seen it already); it includes our biannual teacher training guide. In the spirit of gratitude, I would like to thank Associate Editor Karen Henry for her months of work and attention to detail. Her service in seeing this project through from beginning to end has been invaluable and has made possible the creation of this guide.

The people around us constantly offer valuable support, collaboration, and community. How we choose to participate is up to us. In this month’s cover story, spiritual teacher and speaker Marianne Williamson speaks about how she is participating in community by stepping up the reach of her speaking engagements—by running for the U.S. Congress as an independent candidate. Her goal is to participate in a politics of transformation. All of us who practice yoga have varying points of view when it comes to politics; but I believe that what is most important and what we can all agree upon is the process of engaging in the conversation. With Gratitude for each other’s contributions along the way.

Speaking of our participation, in this newsletter and December issue, Dr Gabriel Cousens tells us how to protect ourselves with remedies to counteract the effects of radiation spread along the West Coast from Fukushima. We can be empowered to protect our own health and well-being, so read below.

With Gratitude,
Felicia Marie Tomasko

Remedies for Radiation: The Greener the Better

Greens

There’s been a lot of talk about radiation exposure in the wake of the Fukushima meltdown. Dr. Gabriel Cousens suggests a seven-fold approach to protect ourselves from the effects of radiation exposure.
His number one suggestion is to “create a positive selective uptake dynamic.” In other words, our cells will absorb fewer radioactive minerals if they are already saturated with healthy minerals. Since radioactive iodine is a major nuclear plant meltdown contaminent, be sure to load up on nascent iodine. Iron-rich foods will do the trick, such as Swiss chard, turnip greens, wild garlic, onion, watercress, spinach, asparagus, kale, citrus, watermelon, and pineapple.
