A Compassionate Journey toward Healing
Yoga and Grief, by Gloria Drayer and Kathleen Doherty, provides a healing process filled with compassion and conscious awareness.
In the words of Ram Dass, “In a culture that emphasizes stoicism and forward movement, in which time is deemed of the essence and there is little tolerance for slowness, inwardness and melancholy, grieving, a healthy, necessary aspect of life is too often overlooked. The older we get, the more we lose, this is the law of impermanence.”
In Yoga and Grief: a Compassionate Journey toward Healing, Gloria Drayer and Kathleen Doherty describe the benefits of yoga for those who are grieving. Experienced yoga and grief-focused workshop leader Gloria Drayer’s kind voice and expertise allow this book to be easy to read and comprehensive.
The subject matter speaks clearly about the grieving process; I commend these women for exploring the journey of loss and grief, a subject that is rarely acknowledged in our culture. Through various yoga postures, meditations, and breath work described and aptly illustrated in these pages, the journey to healing can begin. With compassion and conscious awareness, the authors reach out to those whose hearts have been touched by loss.
Very little has been written so far in the area of yoga and grief, and as a former hospice nurse, I was humbled to experience the compassion and love put forth so beautifully by these authors. This is a meaningful addition to a yoga teacher’s library or a gift for a loved one who is grieving.
