From the Editor

Once we pivot on the timestamp of the Winter Solstice, the days start becoming longer. It happens in such an incremental manner that we may not even notice the shift. Yet the shift takes place. It may be part of why we come together in such powerful celebrations this time of year—in the midst of the cold and dark we can remember that the light really does return. Every year. And every year the incremental power of our practice helps us to stay both centered and grounded amidst the cycles of the year and of our life.

Elisabeth Röhm chooses a nutritious morning smoothie, musicians Maetar, Donna De Lory, and Lili Haydn revel in the healing power of sound, and we all find that the ritual of our morning routine can be an antidote for chaos.

Many of us find joy in our companion animals. In the March 2015 issue of LA YOGA, we shared portraits of people and their pups. (check out the digital edition here)

We’re planning to share a gallery in our March 2016 issue—this time of yogis and their purring feline friends. OC based teacher and LMU Masters degree graduate Erika Burkhalter shares one of her pics this week. Please submit to: news@layoga.com and share the love.

As we wind down the year, may your inner light continue to shine.

With Joy,

Felicia Marie Tomasko

Find Solace amidst Holiday Stress

The holidays are known to exacerbate anxiety, stress, and an overall imbalance in one’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Seasonal changes, financial stress, family pressure, holiday shopping, unrealistic expectations, and not being close in proximity to family and friends are some of the triggers that can cause imbalance. The solution can be found through cultivating consistency in daily routine of ancient Ayurvedic rituals performed each morning. Set aside time for you this holiday season. Even a few minutes a day can create the shifts needed to maintain balance.

Vedic Astrology with Sam Geppi

This Full Moon in Gemini harmonizes the mind and intellect with our beliefs, so that we are able to understand what we believe to be true. If we cannot explain what we believe, then it is just dogma, dogma which fails to help us in time of need and denys us tolerance for those with different beliefs. You may find yourself unsure of your path and looking for alternative answers, so be watchful of ready-made tidbits of New Age pablum masquerading as wisdom. True insight comes only after serious study and inquiry.
