From the Editor

We all know that there’s something to this idea of eating whole, plant-based foods that are locally grown and in season. We may schedule our day or our week around visiting farmers markets (if we’re lucky). We love the crunch of a fresh apple or pear, but we may wonder just what magic is contained within the ripe fruit.

So–here are four reasons to choose to eat fresh pears.

1. High in fiber. (Regular consumption of fiber is important for physiological functions including digestion and elimination as well as blood sugar regulation.)
2. Rich source of Vitamin C and K. (We’ve heard of the multifaceted benefits of Vitamin C for the immune system, skin integrity, and as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions. Vitamin K is vital for healthy blood clotting.
3. Abundance of phytonutrients like phenols and and flavonoids. (From cancer prevention to potent antioxidants, these natural plant compounds are nutritional powerhouses.)
4. Bonus! Pears are delicious, eaten on their own, or within Red Jen Ford’s Asian Pear Summer Salad. (Scroll down for a recipe to try this weekend.)

The moments we hold a piece of fresh fruit in our hands is a bit of an antidote to the fast-pace lives we lead–and the feelings of acceleration we may be experiencing in the world today.

Another antidote to the frenzy is found within the warm embrace of a hug. Try giving and receiving some hugs today–or head to the Hilton LAX Friday, June 14 for the ceremony and event of Devi Bhava, and receive a hug from renowned Indian saint, activist, philanthropist, and expert huggerAmma.

Hugs,
