Starting an Aerial Practice

Inspired to begin an Aerial Practice? Several of the places in the following resource list were personally attended by author Miyoko Rifkin and demonstrated exceptional instruction and focus on safety. Please be cautious whenever beginning a new aerial practice as instructors vary in their focus on therapeutics or alignment versus art and creativity. Student-teacher dynamics may also vary person to person. Know your body, know your limits. If you feel unsafe pain in the joints in any pose, speak up, or even consider a different teacher or studio.

However, some aerial arts can simply be painful or uncomfortable until your body builds a tolerance to pressure in new places or is able to utilize different muscle groups. Pole, Silks, Hoop, and Hammock can squeeze you in places you’ve never been squeezed before, and part of the journey is the bruising. Once you’ve found an amazing teacher, you can navigate that journey together.

The home use equipment sites listed offer instructional manuals and video tutorials. Some also provide links to studios where you can take classes or receive instruction on how to use the equipment.

Safety Precautions

As in any workout regime, practitioners should be cautious and aware of the risks of improper use of any of these tools. In all of the classes attended, the teachers were rigorous about safety and the abilities of the students. They took the time to teach the proper techniques before allowing students to practice. But as in a mat practice, ego can sometimes present itself. Listen to your body and make honest evaluations of your level of ability on the day of your adventure. Make sure to share any injuries or deficiencies to your instructors so that they can also help keep your practice safe and responsible.
