Energy Medicine Yoga: Book Review by Lauren Walker

Sounds True

The principles of energy medicine have the ability to amplify the healing power of your yoga practice. As Lauren Walker, master teacher and expert student of energy medicine, describes in this easy-to-read yet profound guidebook, energy moves in patterns. Energy forms habits. Energy is affected by thoughts, environment, and the people around us. We are all comprised of energy and connected by a unified energy field. By directly addressing the energy field of the body through practice, we can refine our yoga practice to more effectively support our health and well-being.

The book combines detailed yet relatable discussions of our vital life force along with techniques for healing, including our chakra system, and how we are affected by the disruptive effects of trauma, and how we can use techniques combined with intention and targeted yoga practice to realign the body and recover from past or present shock and trauma.

Some of the most powerful aspects of Energy Medicine Yoga include detailed posture series combining asana with energy medicine, such as the Empowered Warrior Series and Three Warrior Vinyasa. These link the subtleties of energy medicine practice with embodied asana to heal mind and body simultaneously.

The techniques in Energy Medicine Yoga can help change your relationship to your past and dramatically transform your physical and emotional health in the present.

This particular mantra surrounds the magnetic field with protective light and translates to “I bow to the Primal Wisdom; I bow to the Wisdom through the Ages, I bow to the True Wisdom, I bow to the Great Transparent Wisdom.”

The call-and-response spiritual art form of Kirtan aids the individual in attuning themselves with the Infinite. The goal of Kirtan is to bring peace to the mind by attaining the stage of sahaj (bliss).

Sometimes the songs can do more than uplift the individual; they can uplift community. Kirtan Aid: Orphan’s of Rishikesh is a nonprofit music project to develop an empowerment home for abused and abandoned children in Rishikesh. Prabhavati Dwaba is the founder of Ramana Garden Children’s Home—named for Sri Ramana Maharshi, a holy Saint of India. Ramana Maharshi sent Prabhavati Dwaba to meditate in a cave on the bank of the Ganges where local children would come and visit—many were alone, after having suffered unbearable life experiences, or were on the verge of being sold to brothels. Prabhavati guided the children and eventually was motivated to begin the school. Many of the Kirtan musicians featured on this album have actually traveled to Ramana’s Garden to chant with the children.

The Sat Nam Fest Foundation was formed in collaboration with Spirit Voyage Records and Sat Nam Fest and the Kirtan Aid album is one of their first projects. The artists contributing here hail from a variety of spiritual traditions and record labels, offering the gift of song in support of service. In addition to Deva Premal, the album features Krishna Das, Snatam Kaur, Jai-Jagdeesh, Tina Malia and Shimshai, Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach, Harnam, Wynne Paris, Simrit Kaur, Dave Stringer and Karnamrita Dasi, Ram Dass and Nirinjan Kaur, and Sudha and Maneesh de Moor. All proceeds from the album go towards expanding the home for the children. Learn more at: spiritvoyage.com.

Spirit Voyage Records

Yogi Bhajan said that inside each human being is a light that is brighter than a thousand suns. His lectures inspired many songs and his messages set the vibration for this powerful, intuitive series of mantras.

GuruGanesha Singh and Paloma Devi combine their hypnotic and stunning vocals with the mesmerizing cello of Hans Christian, collectively inviting the presence of the divine into the heart of every listener.

The opening track, “A Thousand Suns,” relays the message to open your heart with “Ang Sang Wahe Guru,” which translates to “The dynamic, loving energy of the Infinite Source of All is dancing within my every cell, and is present in my every limb. My individual consciousness merges with the Universal consciousness.”

“Thy Will Be Done” draws us deeper into the Naam, or sacred sound current, by asking us to surrender to the will of the Divine and serve.

GuruGanesha’s previous albums have primarily featured words from the Sikh tradition. It is a beautiful change to hear him lend his talents to the famous Hindu mantra “Sri Ram.” Paloma Devi’s vocals on this track are particularly sensual, strong, and sacred.

Produced by Thomas Barquee, with the addition of Tripp Dudley on drums, Gurusangat Singh on bass guitar, and Sat Kartar Singh on acoustic guitar, this album blessed with Guru’s grace and cosmic infinite bliss is a joyful accompaniment to any practice.
