Outwardly, every yogi’s practice may look different, but inwardly we’re all striving to create the same thing: space.

At Inner Space Yoga in downtown Santa Ana, surrounded by the simplicity of four white walls and a sturdy cork floor, you can discover for yourself what the practice brings.

The studio opened in October as part of “The Roost,” a mixed-use development that also includes restaurants and retail. Inner Space Yoga’s schedule consists of meditation, an array of Hatha and Vinyasa classes for all levels (including Candlelight Flow), Kundalini Bliss, Outer Space Yoga (aka kids yoga), Baby and Me practices, and a handful of other specialty classes. Meditation lunchtime classes are offered for $9 for a single class with discounts for a series. Owner Marta Novials says she intends the studio “to be very community focused and to have open ears to what the community might need.” Possible future additions to the schedule include deaf yoga, LGBT yoga, and yoga for kids on the spectrum.

Marta is thrilled about the potential of bringing yoga to an area that is underserved when it comes to wellness. She says Santa Ana has developed significantly in terms of restaurants, bars, and nightlife in recent years, but “still doesn’t have many healthful, community oriented businesses.” With a fun, friendly vibe, an outdoor patio for post-yoga socializing, an ice cream shop next door serving vegan flavors, and a team of experienced teachers, Inner Space is making itself a resource for yoga and mindfulness practices in this evolving cityscape. Two week of yoga for $30 available to students new to Inner Space is available until April 2016.

Radha Yoga hosts yoga classes for all levels of student in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has earned the reputation of being the mecca of all that is yoga, with luxurious studios as gathering places of the well-trained and the well-groomed. For the yoga novice, however, the thought of setting foot in these hallowed halls can be an intimidating experience.

When Radha Yoga owner Kaitlin Ferrell first moved to LA, she found herself in that same situation. While she craved a regular practice that would keep her body limber and her mind balanced, she felt uneasy going mat-to-mat with students in a group yoga setting. After getting by on YouTube and DVD yoga classes, she finally gathered up the courage to take a class at her local gym. It was only after meeting up with a very supportive and encouraging teacher that she finally felt worthy enough to join a class at a well-established yoga studio. Since then, her practice has blossomed so much that she’s now a yoga teacher with her own yoga studio.

Radha Yoga was created to be a welcoming and authentic community where everyone learns and grows together. Yoga classes and workshops are taught by seasoned teachers handpicked by Kaitlin herself; they include Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Yin, and Sound Bath Restorative classes. The cozy second floor space is adjacent to USC, Pico-Union and South LA, and as Kaitlin observes, “It’s so cool to have classes where the (USC) students and the locals are doing yoga together.” She adds, “Beginners are offered modifications and the more experienced are given options. And since we can only fit so many into our small space, everyone gets individualized attention.”

Drop-in classes are $10; packages and donation classes are also available.

The small class sizes allow the teachers to connect with new students and help eliminate some of the intimidation that can be present.

With this in mind, April created a Yoga Basics workshop that allows students to go deeper into their practice. As she says, “I have a lot of beginning students, and they always want to know, ‘What can I do?’ or ‘How can I do it?'” In these classes, April goes over asana in detail, offers modifications, and reviews philosophy.

Her family life serves as an inspiration; after she realized how much her own daughter loved it when they practiced together, she began a Yoga for Toddlers class where parents and children can move together. April even works in a little coloring time at the end of the class to keep the toddlers busy while parents take a break in savasana.

Unfold Yoga offers vinyasa flow, restorative, Hatha, and pre- and post-natal classes, as well as a variety of workshops. For a warm, friendly vibe, a feeling of community, and the desire to bond with your current or future children, Unfold Yoga offers a fulfilling place to practice.

By Melissa Chua

Simona Evoli (also known as Dharma Kaur) has traveled the world immersing herself in different cultures and sharing the practice of Yoga. Simona has a background in dance, theater, and painting, and with devotion, expresses her creativity. She has brought this spirit to Los Feliz where she has opened Simona Yoga, with the intention that it is a place where people can express their souls and be free, creative, and spontaneous.

The studio houses three rooms, each painted with a color to activate different aspects of consciousness. The green main room instills growth and transformation while creating peace and inner balance during yoga. The blue room inspires creativity and unlocks energy flow. The purple mediation room symbolizes knowledge, intelligence, and devotion.

Simona Yoga specializes in Shakti Dance®, a sacred form deeply rooted in the science of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. Shakti Dance® implements insights drawn from Yogic philosophy to awaken and embody universal principles of harmonious movement. By incorporating dance styles, Shakti Dance® focuses breath, motion, and mindfulness to expand consciousness. Additionally, the studio offers Kundalini, Hatha, and meditation.

“I want to manifest my creativity clearly and share as much as possible with people who want to feed themselves with the energy of love, respect and compassion,” Simona says.

The DVD is divided into two half-hour segments, “Hatha” and “Flow,” making this video ideal for anyone looking to fit Yoga into their home life. The box set contains a strap to facilitate many of the movements in the sequences.

Tamal Dodge is both calming and helpful as a narrator as well graceful while demonstrating the practice. His directives are clear and his explanations of each pose are thoughtful and expressive. The setting is beautiful too; it is filmed on the Pacific Ocean in the sunlight. The combination found in Hatha and Flow Yoga for Beginners provides viewers with a way to take some time for oneself, to breathe, to see the ocean, and to heal.

The two programs are varied but equally beneficial. The Hatha section aims to relieve stress, increase flexibility, and boost circulation through stretching and static poses. The Flow portion moves swiftly through poses to build stamina, increase core strength, improve balance, and boost mental clarity and focus.

This DVD puts forward Tamal’s philosophy as a Yoga teacher, musician, and one of the founders of the Yoga Collective: Fostering a connection between body, mind, and spirit will create a healthier, happier and more fulfilled world.
