Let your light shine! Kym Herjevec is an Aussie native turned professional dancer and three-time Dancing with the Stars champion who envisioned building a studio to bring dance fitness to the people. When Kym heard that motivational fitness legend Richard Simmons was closing the doors of his famous Beverly Hills studio Slimmons (after 40 years of sweating with just about everyone), she jumped at the opportunity to move into the space.

About The BOD by Kym Herjavec

Inspired by the millions of people who found fitness as a means to self-acceptance in the 1980s, Kym sought to reinvent the Slimmons space but keep the soul. After a few coats of white paint, the addition of modern gold accents, and floor-to-ceiling curtains, The BOD by Kym Herjavec opened its doors in May with a full schedule of classes. Her goal: for students and clients to feel happy in their own bodies and for fitness to be the result, but fun to be the means.

The BOD by Kym Herjavec offers dance fitness in many forms, with themed classes including Latin, Hip-Hop, and Broadway. Dance Fit BOD is the studio’s signature class; it combines cardio dance with barre and sculpting. A wide variety of other options are also available, such as ‘80s BOD, Latin BOD (learn the moves you see on Dancing with the Stars!), Diva BOD (unleash your inner pop star), Yoga BOD, Mindful BOD (meditation), and R&R BOD (a class devoted to myofascial release through foam rolling). Private lessons in a variety of methods are available. Check out the Bridal BOD Program to get partners ready for their wedding day. If you’re not near Beverly Hills, you can sign up for virtual memberships to The BOD by Kym Online.

The BOD offers an introductory $50 one week unlimited package, and a monthly unlimited summer sale at $199.

Alanna Zabel, owner of AZIAM Yoga, which sits serenely over San Vicente and 26th Street, moved into the space because she felt the stars align. While following a series of undeniable signs from the Universe, her path led directly back the sun-filled Brentwood space where she taught 20 years ago when it was Maha Yoga. While sitting in meditation she listened intently; The message was clear: You’re home. So she opened AZIAM Yoga.

“To me, synchronicities and music are godliness.” As a dancer, Alanna has music in the forefront of the studio. The schedule includes classes such as binaural sound meditation, mind travel mediation, sound baths, DJs and ImprovYoga. The meditation practices on the Aziam schedule are free for people with class packages and by donation otherwise. Alanna’s branded YogaBarre, a fusion of Pilates, barre, yoga and sculpt adds some fitness to complement the spiritual and meditative classes, as does House of Core. Other teachers on the studio’s schedule include Tom Morley, Dianne Magnette, Amy Rose, Amanda Huggings, Ryan Bastiste, Stephen Bickle, Jenny Geyser, Jessica Jablonski, Carrie Costello, Ryan Orrico, Navaris Darson, Megan Taylor, DJ Sol Rising, Trevor Gribble, Barbara Scheidegger, Amanda Huggins, and Kishan Shah. Each week classes and ideas are centered around a different “I Am” theme, uniting a community around a positive state of being.

In addition to the regular schedule, AZAIM (pronounced as I am) offers a One Day Detox Retreat. Participants enjoy superfood smoothies from Beaming, a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains followed by a detox elixir and yoga class infused with positive mind-enhancing techniques. The day finishes with treatments at Tikkun Spa, a detox soup from Soupure, and a restorative yoga and mediation.

AZIAM offers a grand opening special of 30 classes for $330, available through March 20.

The metamorphosis of the HB Yoga Collective is a homecoming for many like me who started their practice in this space when it was called Yoga Place and then when it was YogaWorks. Now a group of new owners—supported by a community who provided startup capital, workmanship, and locally sourced goods—have created a warm, welcoming environment with classes that include yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, Pilates, strength training, and ELDOA spinal opening.

For the women with the vision, this union felt like destiny. Kori Strobl, a beloved teacher (with a masters in Spiritual Psychology) met Nicolette David (a former high school English and Biology teacher) and became her mentor in the Yogaworks 300-hour teacher training. They came together with Shina Chen (Ayurvedic practitioner and owner of Rasa Eats).

Complemented by their husbands: Jeremy Stobl, who constructed most of the interior decor, Jason Amstutz, a chiropractor teaching spinal therapy and myofascial stretching, and Nick Lekas whose experience in finance builds the business’ backbone. “We are all in love with our community, our teachers, and each other. As friends this has been a fun and creative adventure that has brought us all closer. We feed off each other’s strengths and learn from each other every day,” says Kori of her partners. “We are committed to all that is yoga, not just asana. We offer meditation classes, kirtan, and philosophy featuring such renowned teachers as Dr John Casey,” shares Nicolette.

The location has been transformed from the ground up. starting with a community gathering where we penciled in drawings and affirmations on the barren walls, which are now covered by soothing hues, reclaimed grey wood, and lovely sconces. Everything in the retail boutique has been selected to include local artisans, printmakers, homemade products, and consciously chosen organic foods and pristine alkaline water.

I recommend this studio to all of my friends; there is something here for everyone, with creative pricing starting at just $69/month. You just can’t leave this studio untouched by the sincere and heartfelt outpouring of LOVE from the owners.

Ra Yoga’s flagship studio in Costa Mesa has been around and thriving for just over five years. Those who are fortunate enough to call it their “home studio” will eagerly offer commentary about their favorite classes and teachers, how beautiful the space is, or how Ra Yoga has transformed their practice.

What inevitably follows is recognition of that special something that every studio strives for yet few truly succeed in creating: a sense of community. Owners Bobby Kittleman and Jenny Vande Hei have been committed to the Ra Yoga community since day one, which led them to open a second studio this year, located in Newport Beach. For them, the new studio was about creating more opportunity for everyone—students, teachers, and staff.

Now with the two studios, there are over 200 classes per week and more than 50 instructors, so students can always find something on the schedule to suit their mood. There are standard classes like Vinyasa, Meditation, Yin Yoga, Ra-storative Yoga, and Prenatal Yoga, as well as the more unique ones like Yogalates, Strength (yoga with weights), Hot Ra (heated to 105?), and Budokon, which blends elements of Hatha yoga and martial arts. Bobby says they want teachers to have the freedom to express themselves, and for every teacher’s unique style to be celebrated. “Somebody who teaches strength is just as good and as valuable as somebody who teaches prenatal” he says “and vice versa.”

The culture and offerings at Ra Yoga are constantly evolving. “Yoga in and of itself is evolution” Jenny says. “As we grow, we continue to transform and change things. If nothing changes, we haven’t grown personally, spiritually, or physically.” The evolution of the studio has included a comprehensive 200-hour teacher training, innovative workshops, retreats, and specialized training modules.

As Ra Yoga begins to spread its roots in Newport Beach, Bobby and Jenny want to stay true to their vision and reinforce the three pillars of creativity, authenticity, and community. When you step foot in the new studio you’ll recognize that signature “Ra-some” vibe, from the visuals of the space (a front desk wrapped in tree bark and walls decorated with mountains and trees) to the high energy and high quality of the classes.

Kevin Mattison was introduced to his first Bikram class as he was approaching 50; in this class he found the yoga practice that resonated the most with him. In 2011, he completed teacher training. After a career change from scientist to yoga teacher, a trip to India, and a few months of searching for the perfect studio location across the country, Kevin and his wife Amy finally found a home for the Hot Yoga 1000 logo the two had created. Filling a void in the area, Kevin and Amy planted their Bikram Method studio, Hot Yoga 1000, in Newbury Park last March.

At Hot Yoga 1000, “We put people first,” says Kevin. “We encourage people of all experience and ability levels to achieve their best in and out of the hot room.”

The studio aims to provide a framework of holistic healing modalities through yoga, therapeutic massage, and nutrition. In addition to co-owning the studio, Amy Mattison is an experienced bodyworker whose technique, The Mattison Method, combines integrative bodywork and brain-based coaching.

Hot Yoga 1000 hosts a full schedule of Bikram Method Hatha yoga classes daily, taught by a well-trained and dedicated team of Bikram graduates who all hold additional yoga training certificates. The environmentally controlled hot room averages 105 degrees Fahrenheit, while the humidity level ranges from 38 to 40 percent. During the 90 minute practice, yogis engage in the Bikram Method’s 26 asanas and two pranayamas (breathing practices). Don’t be alarmed to find Veronica the (stuffed animal) tiger lounging alongside the mats. She’s the studio mascot and toy whose role is to encourage students to maintain strength in challenging poses.

The intention of the space behind the name, Goorus (think Guru) is a remembrance of the heart teacher in us all.

Goorus Yoga is the only dedicated yoga studio in Pacific Palisades, believe it or not. Husband and wife team Gretchen and John Lightfoot didn’t plan on opening a yoga studio. But after news of the that the yoga studio in this location would be closing, Gretchen and John decided to continue to provide an opportunity for the Palisades community to come together on the mat by providing a space to raise awareness and create opportunities for personal growth, health, inspiration, and transformation.

The natural light and lofty ceilings in the studio create a welcoming, inviting, and inspirational environment. As soon you walk in, you feel like you can exhale fully. The entry, adorned by canvases by local artists, is warm and peaceful; it is conducive for connecting with friends old and new.

Goorus offers a full range of classes and workshops for students of all levels including their popular Iyengar Yoga classes, classes for children, chair yoga, and even Bollywood dance. Each weekday morning begins with a balancing Rise and Shine Yoga practice.

John Lightfoot, a Pacific Palisades native, has long deep roots in the community and is dedicated to preserving the benefits a yoga studio brings to the area. Walk in and you immediately feel the pulsing heart of the space.

Founded by yoga therapist May Che, re:YOGA focuses on individualized programs designed to meet the personal needs and goals of students through private lessons and semi-private classes. Che’s vision was to offer a safe, non-competitive space for wellness where students can work directly with experienced practitioners to reduce tension and increase overall health and wellness through both traditional and modern techniques.

In addition to yoga, re:YOGA offers therapeutic themed workshops (some complimentary) as well as a variety of individualized body work options including massage therapy, cranial sacral work, sound healing, Pranassage (a blend of yoga, assisted stretching, and massage) and Manual Lymph Draining (MLD) to help students advance in their healing process. Instructors at re:YOGA therapy not only hold advanced yoga certifications, but many are credentialed and certificated in complementary modalities such as yoga therapy, Barre, massage therapy, personal training, and Ayurveda.

The intimate studio is bright and airy, providing a welcoming environment where instructors can get to know their students and develop classes with each individual’s needs taken into consideration. re:YOGA therapy + wellness, located in the Palms neighborhood of West Los Angeles, offers something that most studios cannot — an unsurpassed level of personal attention.

Tiffany Caronia was initially lured to the mat by yoga’s physical benefits, but she soon discovered the profound impact the practice of yoga had on her overall well-being. Working as a publicist for over 10 years, Tiffany immediately noticed the practice’s invaluable effects- reduced anxiety, relief from depression, improved focus, more contentment and acceptance for what is. The practice of yoga quickly became a way of life for Tiffany and she was inspired to share its benefits with others.

Tiffany has studied extensively with Annie Carpenter, holding an advanced certification in Carpenter’s SmartFLOW Yoga methodology. She has also studied yoga therapy at Loyola Marymount University and continues to practice and study with teacher Alexandria Crow. Tiffany’s alignment and anatomically driven classes teach students to move slowly and mindfully. By instructing students how to move into the poses, she teaches them to move with intention and focus their attention so that they can make wise decisions based on the present moment. It’s this skill of concentration — cultivated on the yoga mat — that students can take into their daily lives so they can live with more clarity, awareness and maybe even a little more ease.

Knowing she wasn’t alone in this, she created Orange County’s parent-friendly yoga studio. At yoga squared, parents can enjoy a peaceful practice while their kids explore toys, books, and games in the playroom under the supervision of babysitters. As Casey says, “Parents can refill their own cup and then pour it back into their kids. When you’re able to take time for yourself, you’re able to be such a better parent.”

Casey also believes that including your children in the activities you love is the key to creating strong family bonds. Since opening the studio in August, she has already hosted a toddler yoga workshop. Casey plans to host more events where parents can share the joy of yoga with their kids, as well as family-friendly events such as potlucks.

Other highlights include monthly free yoga classes for veterans and an upcoming day of beauty and wellness, with proceeds going to a charity for victims of human trafficking. Casey also looks forward to hosting her 200-hour teacher training program—Shanti Shanti Yoga School—and workshops she developed including yoga of self-acceptance and yoga for a healthy body image. “The first time I ever felt truly confident was on my yoga mat,” she says. “I don’t think I ever would have felt that if I hadn’t found yoga, and I want to share that feeling with anyone who will let me.”

Whether you’re a parent or just a yogi looking for a new spot to develop your practice, you’ll find something to love at this studio, a cozy loft in the heart of Old Town Tustin.

The continued evolution and success of Haute Yogi has led owner Tiffany Friedman to move to a brand new studio just a few blocks from her original and now former location. With its roots in traditional Gosh/Bikram hot yoga, Haute Yogi now additionally offers a wide array of styles (some heat the body externally, while others focus on internal heat-building), including Vinyasa, Kundalini, Fusion, Ashtanga, Acro, Aerial, Yin Restoratives & Yoga Nidra. The blossoming of this popular beachside studio is a reflection of Tiffany’s own growth as a leader in the South Bay yoga community, and she has brought onboard a group of highly credentialed teachers to engage, inspire, and stretch her devoted practitioners.

At Haute Yoga, the studio itself is a no-expense-spared, state-of-the-art space that provides a luxurious yet meditative ambiance in which to surrender to your practice. Only one block from the beach, it affords an opportunity to take in the ocean view during class and soak up some sun and surf before or after class. One of the coolest features in the new studio is a stunning concrete and a sea-glass-inspired outdoor shower area with festoon lighting and exposed plumbing. Down Dog meets Dwell.

Tiffany describes Haute Yogi as a “sanctuary for vibrant health.” She has added a series of workshops and specialty classes to the robust schedule of asana classes, addressing a variety of topics like recovery from addiction, sound healing, hip hop flow, and inner/outer alignment.

Classes are available in single, 5, 10, and 30 class passes, monthly and annual unlimited memberships, and an irresistible New Student First Week Unlimited Pass for $30.

Pop Physique’s quaint space on a stretch of Larchmont Boulevard marks the brand’s latest studio. Located down the way from Cafe Gratitude and Lemonade, the white-painted bungalow with dark wood trim may look understated from the outside, but its interior is anything but.

Created by professional ballet dancer and Pilates instructor Jennifer Williams and her brand-developer husband Deric, Pop Physique is a modernized version of the Lotte Berk Method—a mélange of strength training, dance, barre, and Hatha yoga founded in the 1950s. The 60-minute choreographed class tones and sculpts with a warm-up of planks and push-ups, which then progress into exercises focused on the core, upper, and lower bodies. By using props including light weights, Pilates balls, ballet barre, and straps, you can expect to improve posture and thigh muscle shake (a good thing) in just one class.

The founders’ strong sense of design and a playful wink to retro-chic are evident in everything from advertising to interior design to the color of the hand weights. The Tetris-like configuration of the Larchmont studio speaks to its former function as a house. The lobby pops with black-and-white pattern floor tiles and blush-colored reception desk, a MOCA-worthy neon sign “J’Adore Barre” hanging in the chill-out area, and the mirrored L-shaped studio comfortably fits up to 20 students. Around the corner, the changing area features a wall where you can “pop your selfie.”

If you’re a fan of Pop Physique, it’s wonderful to experience this newly outfitted setting. Still a Pop virgin? Taking a class in this shiny new studio is a perfect introduction.

Costa Mesa welcomes Infinite You Meditation Studio, a community space hosting daily meditation classes for all levels.

When Lionela Torriero, owner of Infinite You Meditation Studio, first saw the space where she now hosts daily meditation classes and monthly workshops, she knew there was something special about the energy there. She has since transformed that space into a sanctuary for aspiring meditators of all ages and spiritual backgrounds. Lionela, who has utilized meditation to find greater wellbeing and purpose in her own life, hopes that the studio can offer the same life-changing results to its students.

“It’s not an easy process,” she says. “Meditation looks like it’s easy. You just close your eyes…but it takes practice, dedication, and some knowledge.” Infinite You is equipped to offer that knowledge with a team of certified meditation practitioners and psychologists. While the daily meditation classes are universally beneficial for everyone, the workshops offer in-depth knowledge for students with specific issues and interests.

When you visit the studio, you’ll be welcomed into a tranquil space with a circle of meditation cushions, as well as chairs for those who aren’t comfortable sitting on the floor. After 45 minutes of gentle music and a variety of guided mindfulness techniques, you can’t help but walk out feeling better than when you arrived, as the photographs in the front lobby suggest. They feature Melina, Lionela’s teenage daughter, exhibiting a range of negative emotions that one might experience “before” meditation, as well as the look of radiant joy that happens “after.” Melina, who is currently completing her meditation training, intends to teach classes specifically for teenagers at Infinite You, spreading this powerful practice of awareness to the next generation.

One Down Dog, Eagle Rock, owner Jessica Rosen’s first yoga studio, One Down Dog-Silverlake, opened a year ago. Although she wasn’t actively looking to open another studio, she knew immediately when the space was made available she had to take it.

Rosen came up with the name One Down Dog as a reminder to take life one day—or one downward dog—at a time. Dogs are more than simply poses at One Down Dog; the muse for the logo is four-legged Patrick, a studio regular who happens to be Jessica and husband Daniel’s dog. Patrick often has company as students are welcome to bring their pets to class.

Rosen’s objective was to “create a yoga studio with a sense of community where people felt at home.” To encourage this atmosphere, the teachers teach at both studios and are also students in the One Down Dog community.

The graffiti-painted walls at both the Eagle Rock and Silver Lake studios have an urban feel; Rosen prefers a soundtrack of hip hop and electronica and allows other teachers to share their own sonic vibe. Some of the popular classes include Sweat, a high energy combination of yoga, cardio, and dance; and Chill, with a focus on relaxation. The seven daily classes also include an option for kids.

Corazon Healing Arts is an intimate wellness center founded by Dana Schwartz and David Watts, who are partners in both their professional and married lives. They say, “Our commitment in marriage to each other is a guiding force and foundation in all that we do. We aim to bring this level of commitment to the art, practice, and study of medicine.”

Both David and Dana are licensed acupuncturists, herbalists, and massage therapists who lean heavily on their training and experiences in Peruvian shamanism. They have created a peaceful and nurturing atmosphere in their center, which sits conveniently central to LA’s Westside and Eastside communities. Bringing the wealth and breadth of their disciplines to their clients means offering a full range of services including acupuncture, herbal medicine, hands-on bodywork, and the Andean practice of Despacho, an ancient and powerful offering to Mother Earth to create balance and well-being.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the Corazon Healing Arts offerings is related to their use of essential oils. Essential oils are aromatic compounds found in all parts of plants that are used as a powerful modality to promote vibrant health. Dana and David distribute high-grade certified therapeutic grade oils and hold seminars and workshops to educate how to use essential oils in a variety of ways—including with your pets and companion animals.

Rising Lotus Yoga Studio opens its renovated doors in Sherman Oaks.

For nearly a decade, Rising Lotus Yoga has been serving the Valley community for nearly a decade. After months of renovations, this large independent community now has an even larger location to call home.

When Claire Hartley and Daniel Stewart decided to open a yoga studio together, their intention was to create a space to incorporate sutra (yoga philosophy), and bhakti (devotion) within the asana classes. Claire says, “We loved to build up the bhav (feeling) in the room and integrate the yoga philosophy and sutras on the mat. Daniel and I wanted to build a temple.”

Indeed, the new space feels like a temple and embodies all the elements that yoga practitioners seek to support their practice. As you walk into the new location, the sun shining through the windows evokes both clarity and purity of light (jyotir – light of our true selves). The expansiveness of the lofty ceilings is a reminder of the limitless potential and freedom within (moksa).

The community seating area provides an invitation for everyone to connect with fellow students. In addition to ongoing classes, the three studios rooms are available for conscious events, including talks, speakers and devotional music offerings, to reach those interested in expanding their spiritual practice beyond asana.

Cycle {Beach} House introduces a high intensive indoor cycling studio to Santa Monica.

Not only is this indoor cycling studio premiering a new-to-E! reality TV show, Spun Out, in July, but it opened its second outpost in March. The Cycle {Beach} House brings to Santa Monica all that West Hollywood flagship fans have grown to love about the brand—a 45-minute calorie-torching high intensity interval training workout; pedaling to a pumping playlist in a dimly lit studio as an amped up instructor yells motivational sayings like, “Get what you want out of life. Breathe in that intention and exhale it out to the world.”

Cycle House Santa Monica is located across the road from Palisades Park and around the corner from Santa Monica Place. The industrial-looking 4,000-square-foot studio is decorated in its trademark black and green colors: there’s a 48-seat cycling room, dimmable LED lights, showers, a fitness boutique, free post-workout snacks like apples and bananas, and validated parking. The cycle-celebs from the Melrose location—including Chief Ride Officer Nichelle Hines; her instructor-brother, Aaron Hines; apparel director and instructor Nick Hounslow; as well as the founders and owners, Adam and Lara Gillman—are sometimes spotted on the Westside.

The first class is $18 with online registration (includes shoe rental and towels). Packages and gift certificates are available. For every class taken, the studio donates two meals to those in need. Don’t forget to bring your bottle and fill up on unlimited alkaline water. And, with the Pacific Ocean just steps away, it would be wise to also pack your beach gear.
