Ayurvedic physician Dr Vasant Lad is one of the pioneers of this practice in the modern world. Dr Lad exudes the love of a thousand grandmothers and melts hearts as he teaches and heals with the ancient Indian health system of Ayurveda.
The Documentary The Doctor from India
While working at the National Association of Medical Ayurveda (NAMA) conference in Dallas, Texas, in April, I had a chance to head to the local independent movie theater with many of my colleagues to screen the film, The Doctor from India. This documentary follows Dr Lad’s life and reveals why he is known as the forefather of Ayurveda in the west.
Memorable Moments in the Film
Some of the standout moments in the film included seeing Dr Lad in his native India. We watch him revisit the tiny, humble Indian apartment where he grew up as a child. Viewers learn about how his father was a devotee of Gandhi and the path of nonviolence. The film follows a day in his current life in Pune, India where Dr. Lad lives and works for at least three months a year. After teaching international students at his school, Dr Lad heads into the city each night to work at his free night-time health clinic to serve the sick and poor locals with Ayurveda. I was inspired by the love and devotion he demonstrates in all areas of his life and work.
The Doctor from India reminded me to believe in the mysteries of life, to feel beyond that which we can rationalize with our thinking brain, and beyond what see with our physical eyes.
