A Soulful Approach to Wellness: Moderation and Movement
Ne-Yo is one of the hardest working and most talented artists I know! Even if you don’t recognize his name or know his current #1 single, “Let Me Love You,” you may be familiar with some of his other hit songs, “Miss Independent”, “So Sick”, and “Closer.”
In addition to performing his own material, Ne-Yo has written for some of the world’s biggest pop stars including Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” as well as Rihanna’s “Unfaithful” and “Take a Bow.” Additionally, Grammy award-winning Ne-Yo has penned songs for Whitney Houston, Carrie Underwood, and Celine Dion.
When it comes to health and fitness, Ne-Yo’s discipline is inspiring. One of his healthy secrets when it comes to food is moderation, and if you’re going to indulge in a treat (such as french fries), then make sure not to have them every day and to alternate with some other healthy dishes. By the way, Ne-Yo loves seabass and shares his favorite vegetarian recipe below.
On the road, he works out regularly and emphasizes the importance of using your own body as a machine while traveling. We were recently in Chicago together, promoting his new album R.E.D. (Realizing Every Dream). He shared his healthy secrets with me and his trainer BOSS (@justtrain) gave me his workout details.
Ne-Yo’s six-day-a-week workout includes:
Jump rope (10 minutes)
Cardio
Boxing
Hiking (Ne-Yo loves hiking Runyon Canyon when he’s in Los Angeles)
CrossFit
400 sit ups (four days a week)
300 push-ups (three days a week)
Strength intervals
Ne-Yo’s favorite Vegetarian Recipe: Eggplant Parmesan
Ingredients
1 large eggplant, sliced lengthwise into 1/2 inch thick pieces (about eight)
2 eggs, beaten w/ a fork
1 1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil
1 jar chunky tomato pasta sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Directions
Preheat oven with baking sheet inside to 375 degrees. Coat eggplant slices with beaten egg, then bread with crumbs. Spread oil on hot baking sheet and arrange eggplant slices in a single layer. Bake 15 minutes then flip and bake another 10 minutes.
Increase oven temp to 475. In an 8 x 10 inch ovenproof dish, layer pasta sauce and the baked eggplant and top with cheese. Repeat finishing with cheese. Bake until the cheese melts and turns golden in spots, approximately 15 minutes.
