Downtown LA’s Arts District is experiencing a renaissance that is both refined and cutting edge. So it is no surprise that a Yoga collective has emerged amidst the thriving community of artists and entrepreneurs.

Art & Soul Yoga has popped up at Art Share L.A., a nonprofit space that houses 30 artists-in-residence, performance and gallery spaces, and offers art and music classes. With a modest schedule of four vinyasa classes a week — held Thursday through Sunday — they hope to unite a community built on going against the grain. Laura Maly, Art Share boardmember, explains, “I want to bring in anyone who wants to practice in a fun, creative atmosphere; anybody who wants to be a part of a yoga community and doesn’t have the means to do it.” Classes are offered with a recommended donation of only $5 per person.

With so many new businesses opening up in the neighborhood, it’s easy to imagine this collective moving to a shiny new studio where they can ask students to pay more for classes. Yet they have no desire to leave the space. Maly asserts, “The primary mission is to bring people into a space that is weird, unique, funky, and has great things going on all the time.”
