Roger Allers celebrates the human spirit in his animated feature film, Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet.
Some of my all-time favorite films are animated features. A new film has been added to my list.
One of literature’s most beloved works (it has sold more than 100 million copies in 40 languages), Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, has now been made into an animated feature film. It is scheduled to be released onto big screens in LA and New York on August 7 (and nationwide August 21). The Prophet was an official selection at Cannes and premiered in North America at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2014.
Written and directed by The Lion King’s Roger Allers, the all-star cast includes Salma Hayek-Pinault, Liam Neeson, Alfred Molina, John Rhys-Davies, Quvenzhane Wallis, and Frank Langella. Yo-Yo Ma, Damien Rice, and Glen Hansard contributed music to the lush score that is combined with Gibran’s gorgeous poetry. Hayek, and the team’s, passion for the film is revealed in every frame. Acclaimed animators from around the world created an unparalleled dreamscape to illustrate an inspirational tale.
The core of the story follows three characters: exiled poet and artist Mustafa (Liam Neeson), Kamila (Salma Hayek) who cleans his house, and her daughter Almitra (Quvenzhane Wallis). Their adventure is a triumph of the human spirit. In the film, their tale is interwoven with Kahlil Gibran’s stunning poetry set to music. I cried: more than once. And I’m counting the days until it is released on the big screen. For release information and to view a trailer, visit: gibransprophetmovie.com.

Felicia Tomasko has spent more of her life practicing Yoga and Ayurveda than not. She first became introduced to the teachings through the writings of the Transcendentalists, through meditation, and using asana to cross-train for her practice of cross-country running. Between beginning her commitment to Yoga and Ayurveda and today, she earned degrees in environmental biology and anthropology and nursing, and certifications in the practice and teaching of yoga, yoga therapy, and Ayurveda while working in fields including cognitive neuroscience and plant biochemistry. Her commitment to writing is at least as long as her commitment to yoga. Working on everything related to the written word from newspapers to magazines to websites to books, Felicia has been writing and editing professionally since college. In order to feel like a teenager again, Felicia has pulled out her running shoes for regular interval sessions throughout Southern California. Since the very first issue of LA YOGA, Felicia has been part of the team and the growth and development of the Bliss Network.
