Demi Lovato talks to LA YOGA Magazine about her health, exercise regimen and meditation practice.

Artist Demi Lovato is a world-traveling superstar whose new album Confident will be released on October 16. She certainly displays confidence onstage as well as in other aspects of her life. She’s focused on balance and her recently launched skin care line, Devonne By Demi, is becoming as big of a hit as her music. How she takes care of herself, through practices dedicated to mind, body and spirit is an inspiration for us all.

LA YOGA: When you’re traveling and working long days, what do you do to maintain balance?

Demi Lovato: Maintaining my health is the most important thing for balance: I have a passion for exercising and maintaining a great health regimen. I’m on a meal plan, not a diet but a meal plan, because I’m in recovery from an eating disorder. Then of course, taking care of myself whether it’s getting my nails done, or getting a facial or a massage. In addition to everything else, water and sleep are both important to me. Things like that keep me sane. Taking care of myself helps with my internal stress and helps me feel pumped up to conquer my dreams.

LA YOGA: What is your workout routine like?
DL: I do a pretty intense workout at least six days a week. I do circuit training for probably an hour and 15 minutes sometimes an hour and a half. Sometimes I’ll just do cardio, but for the most part I find that it’s important for me to get some sort of physical exercise, even if it’s just walking for my mind.

LA YOGA: Tell us about your meditation practice.

DL: I love meditating because I’m in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. I’ve found that sometimes when I meditate I get this high that I never could achieve with any substance and it’s so much more gratifying. I experience a sense of clarity and peace when I’m able to meditate.

LA YOGA: How did you become involved in developing a skin care line?

DL: There were years when I struggled with body image issues. When I look back, the only way that I took care of myself for a long time was to take care of my skin. When I became healthier, I realized how much skin care meant to me.

LA YOGA: What do you do to take care of your own skin?

DL: For me, skin care is self care. When you are able to take care of yourself, you radiate. Maintaining a skin care regimen is important to me. I use the Devonne By Demi hydrating radiance mist when I tour and when I fly because it is so hydrating. I listen to my skin and give it what it needs.

Felicia M. Tomasko
Felicia Tomasko has spent more of her life practicing Yoga and Ayurveda than not. She first became introduced to the teachings through the writings of the Transcendentalists, through meditation, and using asana to cross-train for her practice of cross-country running. Between beginning her commitment to Yoga and Ayurveda and today, she earned degrees in environmental biology and anthropology and nursing, and certifications in the practice and teaching of yoga, yoga therapy, and Ayurveda while working in fields including cognitive neuroscience and plant biochemistry. Her commitment to writing is at least as long as her commitment to yoga. Working on everything related to the written word from newspapers to magazines to websites to books, Felicia has been writing and editing professionally since college. In order to feel like a teenager again, Felicia has pulled out her running shoes for regular interval sessions throughout Southern California. Since the very first issue of LA YOGA, Felicia has been part of the team and the growth and development of the Bliss Network.
