Creative Artist Liz Marx Makes Her Mark With Artistic Raw Vegan Chocolate

Love inspires many artistic creations. This is certainly true for glassblower, sculptor and raw chocolate artist Liz Marx. Her own love of chocolate initiated her quest for a chocolate recipe that she could eat every day and after playing around with recipes using raw cacao and a number of other alchemical ingredients, she found the magic vegan mix that she now pours into molds for Sweet Nuit.

Fitting for someone whose glass art has been commissioned by the White House, Liz has used her talents to carve multifaceted three-dimensional designs inspired by sacred arts, including Buddhas, intricately detailed lotus flowers, happy Hanumans, staid Ganesha figures, sultry entwined Tantric couples and tame flowers and birds and artistic motifs. While it may seem initially sacrilegious to devour a Buddha head, somehow I think the proponent of impermanence would approve.

An initial drawing becomes a temple when she carves the design into wax or clay used to fashion the food-safe mold that is reused repeatedly to shape the edible sculpture.

More than simply edible, the gold-dusted raw vegan chocolates feature 100% organic, raw cacao from a supplier who works closely with the growing communities to ensure fair trade practices. (Santa Monica-based Essential Living Foods.) Rather than experiencing the crash and burn associated with many commercial chocolates, Sweet Nuit’s aftertaste is as uplifting as the designs.

I first met Liz in a Yoga class, tried her chocolate at one event after another, and in whatever phase of the moon the melt-in-your-mouth creations are enjoyed (and she even has a moon phase series), they are sublime and well worth the sweet indulgence.
